Even from the air, Ferndale looks like a village, and this “Victorian Village” really lives up to its name at street level. The contrast of old and new draws many visitors to see the historic houses not far from twenty-first century freeways.

Humboldt's Scenic Route Still the Way to Go

The drive north through southern Humboldt County takes you along the Eel River with the Redwood Highway on the left and “Avenue of the Giants”, the old US Highway 101, on the right.

USCG Cutter Aspen Tends to Humboldt Bay Entrance Bouy

The US Coast Guard Cutter Aspen tends to navigation buoys inside the entrance to Humboldt Bay. In hundreds of hours of aerial photography, I have never seen the ocean or the bay as calm as on this August 2004 afternoon when the Aspen came to Eureka for the annual celebration of Coast Guard City. Scarcely a ripple shows even in the often-treacherous reach between jetties.
