| From
13,000 feet altitude, the view looking northeast over Humboldt Bay
includes the bay entrance, Eureka, Arcata, and on the horizon the
Trinity Alps, Marble Mountains and Mt. Shasta. Humboldt Bay is the
only deep-water port between San Francisco, 209 miles to the south,
and Coos Bay, Oregon, 156 miles to the north. Long sand peninsulas
protect the South Bay and Arcata Bay basins and concrete jetties provide
some protection to vessels in the bay entrance, calm on this day,
but treacherous during storm conditions. |
