Humboldt Bay Entrance Waves

Leica Vario-APO-Elmarit-R 70-180 mm f2.8

At the entrance to Humboldt Bay, waves crash as high as the navigation tower on the north jetty. After winter storms, photos like this require a long telephoto and some safe distance!

Check out some aerial photos of Humboldt Bay -- this part of the entrance to the bay is shown in the close up crop of the north jetty.

Olympus E-330 with Leica 70-180mm f2.8 and APO 2X Extender, 1/800th sec, ISO 250, f-stop not recorded.

Across the entrance, waves pound the interlocking dolosse of the the south jetty breakwater.

August 2008 UPDATE - The photo above was used for the new Coast Guard wing of the California Aerospace Museum at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento. The waves were combined with three other photos I took as a photographer with the Coast Guard Art Program to make a 15-foot wide entrance mural for this new Smithsonian Affiliate Museum.

On a calmer day, a sea tug still partially disappears below waves at the bay entrance.

After aerial shots of the Humboldt Bay entrance on the previous page, these photos give a better perspective from the ground and from the sailors and fisherman on the sea. Thankfully I was able to take these from a dry perspective with a long telephoto!
